There are a few species, specifically the Brown Recluse, or fiddle back spider, and the black widow that are more serious. Brown Recluse spiders are more difficult to control and may require additional treatment of attics and crawlspaces. The Brown Recluse, like many spiders, like to be left alone and most brown recluse bites occur when spiders are disturbed hiding in stored boxes and unused clothing. Brown Recluse spiders can be found in crawlspaces, attics, and garages. These spiders may be more common than most people think. Another common spider in the Saint Louis Missouri and Illinois is the garden spider and can be seen building funnel shaped webs in corners. These spiders may be mistaken for Brown Recluse spiders and their bites usually not as severe.

If you have spiders in your home it may be helpful to catch some so we can identify them. Remember that if the spider is crushed they may not be able to identify it. The best way to catch a spider without smashing it is with glue traps available at most department stores. You can also catch a live spider in a jar or other sealed container.
